Data Science is everywhere

The first MSc program of its kind in Greece, directly bringing academic knowledge to business practice and ethical design.

Data Science is a discipline for understanding phenomena through data and human design. An act of creating, that involves data and human choices.

Data Science brings benefits, challenges and risks. Benefits regarding discoveries, challenges regarding the logic behind a data model and risks regarding the impact of the model to humans and the society at large. A Data Scientist should aim for a model based on values and ethical design.

This Master program is an exciting journey on what data science can do, focusing on the ‘what’ the ‘why’ and the ‘how’.

The Msc in Data Science program is the result of the collaboration between the Institute of Informatics & Telecommunications, National Centre for Scientific Research Demokritos and the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications, University of the Peloponnese.

Data Science is a set of data, processes and methods that shape the path to useful insights, to discoveries and growing understanding of reality; a data driven reality of any domain of interest. As such, Data Science is emerging across disciplines in continuum and its business potential is analogous to the large learning curve ahead. Signing up for the MSc in Data Science will allow graduates to engage with multidisciplinary endeavours in both the industry and the academy.

More specifically the master program provides:

  • High level specialisation in theoretical and applied areas of Data Science;
  • Better understanding of the mechanisms and techniques that collect, manage, process and mine data to support and improve strategic planning and decision making across multiple domains;
  • Access to market opportunities through the network of the MSc program with the Academia and the Industry;
  • Job opportunities and strong engagement in European and Greek projects, due to the involvement of the coordinating institutions in such endeavours;
  • Better positioning in the job market, through specialising in the analysis of Big Data.

The Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications (IIT) of the National Centre for Scientific Research Demokritos has early acknowledged the importance of data analysis and dedicated significant effort in the field of AI-based methods for big data management and processing. IIT is in the vanguard of research in big data infrastructures and semantics-aware AI at the European and international level. Currently, IIT coordinates many EU funded projects such as AI4Copernicus (a project that aims to bridge Artificial Intelligence with Earth Observation world by making the AI4EU AI-on-demand platform the platform of choice for users of Copernicus data along the value chain), PopAI (A European Positive Sum Approach towards AI tools in support of Law Enforcement and safeguarding privacy and fundamental rights), VAST (a project that brings values to the forefront in the field of advanced digitisation) while participating in national Big Data related projects such as the Flagship Action for SARS-CoV-2. Epidemiological study in Greece. Furthermore, IIT interacts with other NCSR Demokritos Institutes from different disciplines such as the Institute of Nuclear & Radiological Sciences and Technology, Energy & Safety within the EU funded Fair4Fusion project that fosters the open access for fusion data in Europe. Lastly, IIT prioritises the tighter collaboration of Research and Enterprise with initiatives like the DICE- Centre of Excellence in Document Intelligence funded by EY Global. Within DICE, IIT Researchers and Research Associates conduct research for new technological solutions in the field of document intelligence, which will be adopted and/or commercialised by EY Global. The outcome of research work in DICE is patents and scientific publications.

The mission of the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications of the University of the Peloponnese is the cultivation of the science and the technology of computer information processing systems and their applications as well as the training of computer scientists according to the needs of the economy, research, industry and education. The department develops cutting-edge research in numerous areas of data science, including information representation and management, databases with special features (such as object-oriented, spatial, temporal, XML, graph databases etc.), data streams, as well as related applications (service-oriented computing, e-government, complex data management and so forth). The department coordinates and participates in more than 33 European and National research and development projects, with significant results both on scientific publications and on final products/services.

The program is designed to open up career prospects in various fields and roles such as:
