Data Science is everywhere

The first MSc program of its kind in Greece, directly bringing academic knowledge to business practice and ethical design.

Data Science is a discipline for understanding phenomena through data and human design. An act of creating, that involves data and human choices.

Data Science brings benefits, challenges and risks. Benefits regarding discoveries, challenges regarding the logic behind a data model and risks regarding the impact of the model to humans and the society at large. A Data Scientist should aim for a model based on values and ethical design.

This Master program is an exciting journey on what data science can do, focusing on the ‘what’ the ‘why’ and the ‘how’.

The Msc in Data Science program is the result of the collaboration between the Institute of Informatics & Telecommunications, National Centre for Scientific Research Demokritos and the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications, University of the Peloponnese.

Data Science is a set of data, processes and methods that shape the path to useful insights, to discoveries and growing understanding of reality; a data driven reality of any domain of interest. As such, Data Science is emerging across disciplines in continuum and its business potential is analogous to the large learning curve ahead. Signing up for the MSc in Data Science will allow graduates to engage with multidisciplinary endeavours in both the industry and the academy.

More specifically the master program provides:

  • High level specialisation in theoretical and applied areas of Data Science;
  • Better understanding of the mechanisms and techniques that collect, manage, process and mine data to support and improve strategic planning and decision making across multiple domains;
  • Access to market opportunities through the network of the MSc program with the Academia and the Industry;
  • Job opportunities and strong engagement in European and Greek projects, due to the involvement of the coordinating institutions in such endeavours;
  • Better positioning in the job market, through specialising in the analysis of Big Data.

The Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications (ICT) of the National Centre for Scientific Research "Demokritos" recognized early on the importance of data analysis and devoted significant effort to the field of management and processing methods of big data based on artificial intelligence. IIT is at the forefront of research in big data infrastructures and semantic artificial intelligence at European and international level. Currently, IIT coordinates several EU-funded projects, such as AI4Copernicus (project aimed at bridging AI with the world of Earth observation by making AI4EU AI-on-demand platform of choice for Copernicus data users along the value chain), PopAI (a European positive-sum approach to AI tools to support law enforcement and safeguarding privacy and fundamental rights), VAST (project that brings values to the forefront in the field of advanced digitalization) while participating in national projects related to big data, such as the flagship action on SARS-CoV-2 Epidemiological study in Greece.

In addition, IIT interacts with other NCSR Demokritos Institutes from different disciplines, such as the Institute of Nuclear & Radiological Sciences and Technology, Energy & Security in the framework of the EU-funded project Fair4Fusion that promotes open access for fusion data in Europe. Finally, IIT prioritizes closer collaboration between Research and Business with initiatives such as the DICE- Centre of Excellence in Document Intelligence funded by EY Global. As part of DICE, IIT researchers and research associates are conducting research on new technological solutions in the field of document information collection, which will be adopted and/or commercialized by EY Global. The result of research work at DICE is patents and scientific publications.

The mission of the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications of the University of Peloponnese is the cultivation of the science and technology of information systems and their applications as well as the training of computer scientists according to the needs of the economy, research, industry and education. The department develops cutting-edge research in many areas of data science, including information representation and management, databases with special features (such as object-oriented, spatial, temporal, XML, graph databases, etc.), data flows, as well as related applications (service-oriented IT, e-government, complex data management, etc.). The department coordinates and participates in more than 33 European and national research and development projects, with significant results both in scientific publications and in final products/services.

The program is designed to open up career prospects in various fields and roles such as:

Fields Roles PhD and research
  • Data management firms
  • Statistical/data analysis firms
  • Content management software firms
  • International security organizations
  • Data and text mining companies

Upon successful completion of the MSc program graduates will be able to apply for relevant positions in research projects, announced regularly by the Institute of Informatics & Telecommunications. Those graduates wishing to continue their studies for a PhD Diploma will also have the chance to apply for the positions announced in the context of the joint PhD programs of the Institute with Universities in Greece, Europe and the USA.
