Stelios C. A. Thomopoulos

Short Bio

Dr. Thomopoulos is the Director of the Institute of Informatics & Telecommunications (IIT) of NCSR "Demokritos", since August 2013. He had also been appointed to the same position from 07-1998 to 06-2003. He was also Institute's Acting Director for the period 01/02/2007 - 30/06/2008.

Dr. Thomopoulos received his Diploma of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering in July 1978 from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece. He then earned his M.S. degree in January 1981 and Ph.D. degree in January 1983, both in Electrical Engineering from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the State University of New York at Buffalo.

From 1983 to 1992, he was with the faculty of the Electrical Engineering Department of Southern Illinois University first as an Assistant Professor (1983-89), then as an Associate Professor (1989-1990), and then as an Adjunct Associate Professor (1990-92). In August 1989 he joined the faculty of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the Pennsylvania State University, on leave from Southern Illinois University, and remained in the faculty of Penn State University until 1996. In 1995 he co-founded Intelnet Inc., a start-up hi-tech company specializing in biometrics, information management and access control systems, and data mining applications. In 1996, he joined the company full-time as President and Chief Executive Officer. He remained at this position until July of 1998 when he joined the National Center for Scientific Research (NCSR) "Demokritos," as Director of the Institute of Informatics & Telecommunications. He remained on the board of Intelnet Inc. until June 2001. During his tenure as Director of the Institute of Informatics & Telecommunications (II&T) of NCSR "Demokritos" from 07-1998 to 06-2003, all performance indices, from scientific to economic and citations grew significantly. Dr. Thomopoulos is currently Director of Research in the Integrated Systems Laboratory and Associate Director of II&T. He has led or participated in 25 research projects, totaling over five million Euros in funding of his own from the European Commission, the USA and the Greek government.
